According to reports, the incident occurred on Saturday morning when the bandits attempted to carry out an assault on the communities in the area.
The vigilantes had tracked the bandits to their hideout but were ambushed on their way, leading to the tragic confrontation.
While confirming the incident to Daily Trust, Abbas Kasuwar Garba, the chairman of Mariga Local Government Area, expressed his inability to provide the exact number of casualties until search and rescue operations were completed.
He voiced concern over the deteriorating security situation, noting that the area had experienced relative peace until the recent surge in attacks coinciding with the farming season.
Garba stated, “Before this latest incident, we had been enjoying relative peace, and we are happy that our farmers would be able to return to their farms this year after being denied access to farming for the past few years. But with this development, we are not happy, but the government will take action. I want people to be calm.”
However, the State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, refuted claims of the attack occurring in Niger State when contacted by the aforementioned publication.
