Opinion Polls Places Okpebholo Ahead Of Ighodalo As Obaseki’s Godfatherism Triggers Resentment

Each election carries its own distinctive traits, and what’s amusingly unique is how these characteristics often influence the election results. In Edo 2020, the defining feature was the emergence of what came to be known as “4 plus 4 Ogbane,” signifying the endorsement for Obaseki to serve a moral eight-year term as Governor, despite public opinion expressing dissatisfaction with his performance.
Back then, emotions ran high as Obaseki portrayed himself as a victim, resonating with many residents who demanded an end to Godfatherism. Interestingly, similar sentiments that unfolded four years ago are resurfacing, with strong opposition against Obaseki assuming the role of a godfather in the upcoming elections. This has significantly influenced public opinion, particularly regarding his lackey, Asue Ighodalo, who appears to be under Obaseki’s control. Observers perceive Obaseki as shifting the dynamics and adopting the very role of a godfather, despite being a beneficiary of the anti-Godfather sentiment in the past.
Now, let’s examine Asue Ighodalo’s track record. Despite his claims of attaining the highest perks of the corporate world in Nigeria Breweries, his law firm, Sterling bank, and other prestigious institutions, questions linger about his contributions to the people of Edo. What has he done for Ewohimi, his hometown? Even if we understand that fluency in one’s native language isn’t a measure of commitment, how many Esan residents are employed in his ventures? It appears that Ighodalo is yet to establish a strong connection with his constituents, leaving many to question his suitability for public office.
On the other hand, Senator Monday Okpebholo emerges as a compelling candidate. Hailing from Esan land, he embodies the spirit of local empowerment and commitment to community development. As a successful entrepreneur turned senator, Okpebholo has left a lasting impact on his people, with his efforts visible in every hamlet across Edo Central. His candidacy represents competency, local content, and a genuine dedication to serving the people, qualities that resonate deeply with the electorate.
The crux of the matter lies in choosing a leader who prioritizes the interests of the state over personal ambitions. While Ighodalo’s credentials may shine on paper, Okpebholo’s grassroots approach and proven track record make him the preferred choice for many Edo residents. It’s a matter of choosing between imported influence and homegrown leadership, and the scales seem to tip in favor of the latter.
To further underscore Okpebholo’s growing support, mock polls conducted across the three senatorial districts reveal a significant preference for his candidacy. From Edo North to Edo Central and Edo South, constituents express overwhelming support for Okpebholo, citing his tangible contributions to their communities and his unwavering commitment to their welfare. These results not only validate public sentiment but also highlight the momentum behind Okpebholo’s campaign.
In the final analysis, the trajectory of the upcoming elections hinges not on grandiose promises or external endorsements, but on the fundamental principles of accountability and grassroots empowerment. In Okpebholo, Edo residents see a leader who embodies these ideals—a leader poised to steer the state towards a future defined by inclusivity, progress, and genuine representation.
