Ifunanya, described by her peers as quiet and dedicated, was seen as a beacon of hope for her family. Her untimely death left them devastated, as they had eagerly anticipated her positive impact on their lives.

Initially, the circumstances of her death were unclear. However, Chief Safety Officer of UNIZIK, Chief Ken Chukwurah, clarified the situation in an interview with Saturday Vanguard.

Chief Chukwurah explained that Ifunanya and a friend were living off-campus and preparing for graduation when the incident occurred. Contrary to initial robbery speculations, it was revealed that a fellow student played a prank on them.

The tragic event unfolded around 8:20 pm when a male student, jokingly suggesting he might steal their phones, caused Ifunanya and her friend to panic and jump out of the tricycle (Keke) they were riding in. Ifunanya hit her head on the road, sustaining severe injuries, while her friend, though injured, survived and is still receiving treatment. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Ifunanya succumbed to her injuries after a night of struggle.

The male student, who did not flee the scene, helped take the injured to the University Medical Center and then to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku. His involvement and subsequent actions, including staying with the victims and later reporting to the police, confirmed that it was an ill-fated prank rather than a robbery.

The families of both the deceased and the male student met at Chief Chukwurah’s office. The family of the deceased expressed their wish not to pursue legal action, requesting instead that the boy’s family cover the funeral expenses, estimated at N450,000, and an additional ritual cost of N61,000. The boy’s family agreed and even offered an extra N500,000, totaling N950,000.

Chief Chukwurah noted that the peaceful resolution was unexpected but welcomed. Arrangements are being made for the transportation and burial of Ifunanya’s body in Abia State. The families are focused on closing the case with the police to proceed with the burial without further disturbances.

Chioma, a fellow Architecture student, recounted her last moments with Ifunanya, reflecting on the challenges of studying under harsh economic conditions and Ifunanya’s dedication to her POS business. She expressed disbelief and sorrow over the incident, questioning why Ifunanya felt compelled to jump out of the tricycle.

Ifunanya’s body remains in the mortuary in Awka, awaiting transfer to Abia State once the case is officially closed.
