NNPP Dismisses Claims Of Collapsing Structure For Obi, Kwankwaso

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dismissed reports suggesting it is secretly planning to dissolve its political structure in support of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential ambition of Peter Obi and a possible vice-presidential candidacy for Rabiu Kwankwaso.

According to Ireporter Online, the clarification was made by the party’s National Chairman, Bala Yusuf, during an interview on the sidelines of the NNPP’s 11th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.

Yusuf maintained that the party had not entered into any agreement with Kwankwaso, the NDC, or any other political platform, stressing that speculations about an impending alliance were unfounded.

The denial comes amid significant changes within the party, which has witnessed the exit of several prominent figures in recent months. Among those who left are former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso and former National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson, both of whom joined the NDC. The party also lost its only elected governor, Abba Yusuf of Kano State, along with many of his political appointees, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite these developments, Yusuf insisted that the departure of key members would not compel the NNPP to surrender its identity or political structure to any individual or organization.

He further explained that the party’s decision not to present a presidential candidate for the 2027 general election should not be interpreted as an endorsement of any political aspirant or party. Rather, he said the NNPP was prioritizing the emergence of credible and competent leadership capable of addressing Nigeria’s challenges.

Yusuf noted that the party would carefully evaluate candidates produced by other political parties before making any decision regarding collaboration or alliance. According to him, the NNPP is open to working with parties whose constitution and manifesto align with its principles but has not identified any preferred partner at this stage.

He emphasized that fielding a presidential candidate is not an obligation and that the party would only support or present candidates who meet its standards of competence, credibility, and vision for national development.
