Daddy Freeze Explains Why He Walked Out After Mercy Chinwo Took The Pulpit At Alex Ekubo’s Service Of Songs
Media personality Daddy Freeze has criticized gospel singer Mercy Chinwo over her performance at the service of songs held in honour of late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, arguing that the atmosphere of the event strayed from the solemnity expected of such an occasion.
According to reports, Ekubo passed away on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40 after a private battle with metastatic kidney cancer, a development that was confirmed by his family.
Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Daddy Freeze expressed dissatisfaction with Mercy Chinwo’s musical ministration, claiming that the energetic style of her performance transformed the memorial gathering into what felt like a concert rather than a reflective tribute to the deceased.
He maintained that funeral services and services of songs should feature gentle, comforting music that allows mourners to reflect and grieve, instead of lively praise sessions. The broadcaster also questioned the decision to invite multiple guest artistes to lead worship, suggesting that traditional hymns would have been more appropriate for the occasion and would have preserved the serene atmosphere expected at a memorial event.
Explaining why he left the gathering, Daddy Freeze stated that he walked out immediately after Mercy Chinwo mounted the pulpit. He argued that the singer has softer songs in her catalogue that would have been more fitting for the event, adding that hearing hymns instead of upbeat worship songs would have made the tribute more moving and emotionally impactful.
