SSANU Champions Greater Women’s Representation in Leadership Roles

Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, President of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has called for enhanced female participation in leadership positions within the union. Speaking at the 8th SSANU National Women Conference in Abuja, Ibrahim highlighted the substantial benefits that women’s increased involvement would bring to both the union and society at large.

Ibrahim stressed that empowering women within SSANU would enhance their ability to perform effectively, free from undue interference. He acknowledged the pivotal roles women have already played in SSANU, including in mobilization, welfare, and ensuring the overall well-being of its members.

“Women play crucial roles within the union,” Ibrahim remarked, commending their organizational skills and their contributions, such as providing essential medical advice and adapting union regulations to improve productivity.

Looking ahead, Ibrahim expressed hope that a woman might succeed him as SSANU president after his tenure. While leadership positions are determined democratically and are influenced by numbers, he believes having a woman in such a significant role would be advantageous for the union.

The SSANU President reiterated that creating more leadership opportunities for women would not only boost their effectiveness but also foster a more inclusive and representative leadership structure within the union.

In her address, Comrade Agnes Nti, the National Women Coordinator of SSANU, outlined the key objectives of the conference. She urged branch chairpersons to offer robust support to their branch women coordinators. This support is expected to be reflected in the facilitation of branch programs annually and the replication of the conference’s goals at the local level.
