FG Warns Nigerians: Lagdo Dam Water Release Begins, Urges Residents To Move From Flood-Prone Areas

On Thursday, the Federal Government, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), announced that water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon has been released into Nigeria’s River Niger and River Benue.

NIHSA has urged residents in flood-prone areas to move to safer locations in preparation for the floods typically associated with the dam’s water release.

Umar Mohammed, the Director-General of NIHSA, shared this warning during an appearance on Channels Television’s *The Morning Brief*. He explained that the release of water from the Lagdo Dam is being phased to manage the volume and mitigate flooding risks across 11 vulnerable states.

Mohammed, represented on the program by the Agency’s Director of Operations and Hydrology, Femi Bejide, stated that the water release began on Wednesday and is being done in phases to prevent excessive flooding. He also mentioned that discussions with Cameroonian authorities had led to this phased approach.

Previously, the Federal Government had informed Nigerians about the planned release of water from the Lagdo Dam. Flood-prone states include Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, and Rivers.

Currently, the situation remains under control with normal water levels being managed, though water levels are gradually rising. Mohammed emphasized the importance of public involvement in flood prevention, advising that individuals should clear their drainage systems and relocate from floodplains.

Additionally, a report has been submitted to the Presidency recommending the construction of five buffer dams and de-silting of existing dams. Adjustments to the designs of these projects are underway and expected to be completed within the next two to three years.

The release of water from the Lagdo Dam follows recent severe flooding from the Alau Dam, which resulted in over 30 fatalities and extensive property damage in Maiduguri, Borno State. Historical data shows that flooding in previous years has had severe impacts, with significant loss of life and displacement.
