Police Chief Denies Reports Of Minors Detained In Recent Protests

activities such as arson, looting, and property destruction.

In a statement, Egbetokun stressed, “Minors were not arrested for protesting. This false narrative is being spread.”

He explained that the arrested individuals were captured on video committing crimes, including setting fire to public facilities and looting businesses.

Egbetokun also addressed the detention of police officers who were found escorting 100 foreign nationals—primarily Chinese and Malaysian citizens—suspected of cybercrime activities in Abuja. These officers have been taken into custody and will face legal action for their involvement.

The IGP expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for intervening and ordering the release of individuals who were wrongly detained. He reiterated that peaceful protesters, including minors, were not targeted, and their right to protest was upheld.

Egbetokun warned that any police officer found compromising investigations would face serious disciplinary measures, but maintained that the arrests were based on criminal actions, not peaceful demonstrations.
