Unpaid Pension Increments: Retirees Set December Deadline, Vow Nationwide Action
Federal pensioners under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) have urged Finance Minister Wale Edun to expedite the release of their outstanding gratuities spanning from March 2023 to November 2024.……READ MORE
In a letter addressed to the minister, the retirees expressed appreciation for his “civilized approach” during a peaceful rally held on November 12, 2024, at the Ministry of Finance. However, they lamented that promises to address their grievances remain unfulfilled.
Key Demands:
- Immediate release of 21 months’ unpaid accrued rights for retired public workers.
- Payment of overdue pension increments, including:
- 15% (2007),
- 33% (2010),
- 20-28% (2024).
- Consequential adjustments following the 2019 minimum wage increase.
The pensioners, backed by their union, announced plans to occupy the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation in Abuja starting December 16, 2024, until their demands are met.
“This delay not only undermines our livelihood but also tarnishes the Federal Government’s image. We will not leave until our rights are restored,” their union declared.
The retirees also called on the government to declare a state of emergency in the CPS sector and ensure the settlement of all liabilities by the set deadline.
