Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has revealed that her widely recognised dance videos used to promote movies began as a creative marketing strategy when she had limited funds for publicity.

According to reports, Akindele disclosed during an interview with BellaNaija that she adopted the approach while promoting her movie Battle on Buka Street because she could not afford a large-scale publicity campaign.

The filmmaker explained that the idea was born out of necessity as she searched for an affordable way to create awareness and connect with audiences. She noted that many people misunderstood the dance videos as mere entertainment, unaware that they were carefully planned promotional efforts aimed at marketing her projects.

Akindele revealed that after completing the movie, she lacked the financial resources required for traditional public relations and marketing campaigns. She therefore decided to produce promotional content herself, setting up a backdrop in her sitting room and using a camera with the support of her cinematographer and brother.

The actress stressed that the videos represented dedication and hard work rather than just dancing, urging critics to appreciate the creativity and effort behind her promotional strategies.

She encouraged filmmakers and creatives to develop unique ideas that suit their vision instead of criticising others’ methods, adding that her goal is to inspire and create opportunities for the next generation of female filmmakers.

Akindele also spoke emotionally about her commitment to supporting young talents in the entertainment industry. She said seeing upcoming actors reminded her of her own early struggles and strengthened her determination to help others gain visibility and recognition.

The filmmaker stated that although her efforts are not solely driven by financial rewards, she remains committed to using her platform to uplift emerging talents and give them opportunities to be seen and heard.
