Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Oyintiloye highlighted the alarming rise in food prices, making it increasingly difficult for ordinary Nigerians to afford basic meals.

He attributed the soaring costs to factors such as insecurity, high transportation expenses, climate change, and the unstable exchange rate of the naira. According to Oyintiloye, the surge in food prices has significantly weakened the purchasing power of Nigerians, exacerbating poverty and the cost of living.

With food being essential to survival, he urged the government at all levels to implement concrete measures to combat hunger in the country. Citing a recent National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) survey, he pointed out that 65.8% of households are unable to afford healthy, nutritious, or preferred foods due to low income.

While acknowledging the efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to reduce food prices, Oyintiloye emphasized that many Nigerians are still struggling to secure three square meals a day. He expressed concern that despite government interventions, such as the food waiver policy and Central Bank efforts to curb inflation, food prices remain excessively high, with exchange rate fluctuations making the situation worse.

“The current food price situation is becoming unbearable,” he lamented. “Many households can no longer afford nutritious meals, and many are now begging for survival. This is truly disheartening, and the situation is no longer sustainable.”

He called on both state and federal governments to intensify efforts to control rising food costs, warning that the situation could deteriorate further if the underlying issues are not addressed.
