for the position of Ohanaeze President-General, set to take over when Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu concludes the tenure initiated by the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.
Chief Chinedu Arthur-Ugwa, Coordinator of the South-South zone of the Ohanaeze Youth Wing, made this announcement while addressing reporters in Owerri on Wednesday.
Chukwu’s tenure is set to end on January 10, 2025, after his appointment to lead the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization following the passing of Iwuanyanwu.
The Imo Chapter of Ohanaeze, under the leadership of Mr. C J Ihemedu, presented Chukwu to the Imeobi Ohanaeze to complete the four-year term assigned to Imo, which was disrupted by the deaths of Prof. George Obiozor in 2022 and Iwuanyanwu in 2024.
Arthur-Ugwa stated that with the leadership position being ceded to Rivers, the South-South youths of Ohanaeze believe it is most fitting to support Okiro, whom he recognized as “eminently qualified for the esteemed role.”
He explained that South-South youths have closely observed Okiro’s past leadership and view him as an ideal candidate for the position, expressing strong support for his candidacy.
“We, the Ohanaeze South-South youths regard Okiro as a father figure, mentor, leader, and achiever whose exemplary leadership, charisma, and dedication to the nation are well known,” he said.
“We firmly believe that with his extensive experience, exposure, and connections, he is equipped to succeed the legacy of our former leaders if given the chance.”
As Rivers prepares to nominate the next President-General, he assured Okiro of their moral support and committed to assisting him in securing the nomination form.
Arthur-Ugwa also expressed gratitude to the leaders of Ohanaeze for their swift and unanimous decision to bring Chukwu on board, voicing confidence in his ability to foster unity and ensure a seamless transfer of power.
