In a statement shared on its X account (formerly Twitter), NAFDAC highlighted that the Paludex Artemether/Lumefantrine tablets (80mg/480mg) are manufactured by Impact Pharmaceutical Ltd, located at No. 33A/33B Standard Industrial Layout, Emene, Enugu State.

The agency confirmed that these counterfeit medications are being marketed by MD Life Sciences Ltd, also based in Emene Industrial Layout, Enugu State.

NAFDAC’s statement also revealed that a counterfeit Paludex (Artemether/Lumefantrine) dry powder for oral suspension (180mg/1080mg) designed for pediatric use is in circulation. This oral suspension is produced by Impact Pharmaceutical Ltd and Ecomed Pharma Limited in Ogun State, with MD Life Sciences Ltd handling its marketing.

Laboratory analyses conducted by a WHO-prequalified lab in Germany found that both products contained zero percent of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). NAFDAC corroborated these results through its own sampling and analysis.

The agency noted that these products do not appear in NAFDAC’s registered product database, and all registration numbers on the counterfeit items are fraudulent.

It emphasized that genuine Artemether/Lumefantrine tablets and suspensions are essential for treating acute, uncomplicated malaria in both adults and children.

“Counterfeit and substandard medications pose significant health risks,” NAFDAC warned, stressing that non-compliance with regulatory standards compromises product safety, quality, and efficacy. Poor-quality pediatric formulations, in particular, can lead to treatment failures when APIs are below required levels.

NAFDAC has instructed its zonal directors and state coordinators to enhance surveillance efforts and remove counterfeit products from circulation. The agency urged distributors, healthcare providers, and patients to remain vigilant within the supply chain to prevent the distribution and use of these fake products.

The public is advised to procure medical products only from authorized and licensed suppliers, ensuring the authenticity and condition of products. Anyone in possession of these counterfeit items should cease sales or usage and report to the nearest NAFDAC office.

Those who have used any affected products are encouraged to seek immediate medical advice from qualified healthcare professionals.
