New Movement Aims To Combat Money Influence In Nigerian Politics

Segun Showunmi, the convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), has outlined a strategy for selecting Nigeria’s next president…READ MORE…

He advocates for a process that centers on citizens’ consensus, where the chosen candidate would then be presented to a political party under the new movement called “The Alternative.”

At a town hall meeting in Kano State, where NOMC was officially launched in the North West, Showunmi, a former Ogun State gubernatorial candidate, emphasized the necessity of this approach to combat the dominance of “moneybag politicians” who have, he claims, corrupted the democratic process with ill-gotten wealth.

Showunmi stated, “We are currently faced with money-driven politicians who suppress democracy through their stolen resources.” He urged for increased citizen engagement, highlighting the importance of bridging the divide between the government and the populace.

“The people will engage in discussions to identify a consensus candidate, whom we will then present to a political party as our choice. It’s crucial that Nigerians make informed decisions as this dialogue continues. We must work to eliminate the disconnect between the government and the governed and ensure that a worthy candidate emerges from the people for the 2027 election.”

He criticized the influence of money in Nigerian politics, accusing some politicians of using their wealth to undermine democracy and impoverish citizens.

“Today’s leaders want to leverage their financial power to rob us of democracy and keep us in poverty. To prevent this in the upcoming election, we are warning Nigerians about these schemes under the banner of The Alternative. Additionally, we aim to stop politicians from turning Nigeria into a one-party state by creating chaos within the major political groups, limiting our choices for the next election.

“Don’t shortchange yourself by selling your vote or trading your future for trivial offerings. Politicians are using their wealth to take democracy away from you. We are here to combat that,” Showunmi concluded.
