New Political Movement For 2027: Sowunmi Calls For A Revolutionary Shift To Support Credible Leadership

support credible candidates in preparation for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The initiative, which officially launched last week, is positioned as a challenge to Nigeria’s traditional political structure. Sowunmi, the former PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, emphasized that the movement was born out of the growing disillusionment among Nigerians with the current political system.
“The Nigerian people are tired of the status quo,” Sowunmi declared. “We are seeking honest, grassroots candidates who can lead with integrity and change the political landscape.”
Sowunmi expressed deep dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s democracy, pointing to corruption and self-serving leaders as key issues undermining progress. He called for stricter laws and penalties for political misconduct, advocating for a complete overhaul of the governance system, including reforms in opposition parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the judiciary.
Addressing the issue of voter apathy, Sowunmi stressed the importance of civic engagement and the need to combat vote-selling, which he sees as a major threat to democracy. “Every citizen must take ownership of the political process,” he urged, calling for a re-education on the importance of active participation in elections.
This movement, which Sowunmi calls a “liberation effort,” is aimed at empowering Nigerians from all walks of life to create a political framework that truly represents their values and interests. Sowunmi envisions a political future where citizens, not elites, shape the direction of the nation.
In a damning critique of the current state of Nigerian democracy, Adai Edwin Adai, Chairman of the North Central Zone National Opposition Movement, accused INEC of transforming into an “election-rigging institution,” further fueling the call for change.
