the House of Representatives member representing the Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency in Imo State, deeming the action inconsistent with the party’s constitution.
In a statement released on Saturday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba clarified that the purported expulsion, executed by the Umuopia/Umukegwu ward chapter of the party, violated Sections 57(7) and 59(3) of the PDP Constitution, as amended in 2017.
Ugochinyere, who also acts as spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), had been expelled on Friday, according to a statement from Imo PDP Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiak. The expulsion was reportedly initiated by the Ideato LGA chapter, citing allegations of severe misconduct, insubordination, and activities counter to party interests.
A letter dated December 5, 2024, signed by Ideato LGA Chairman ThankGod Okeke and Secretary Onyebuchi Umeh, detailed the charges against Ugochinyere, claiming the decision followed recommendations from the party’s disciplinary committee.
However, Ologunagba refuted these allegations, stressing that any disciplinary action involving a member of Ugochinyere’s rank must comply with the party’s constitutional regulations, which he asserted were not followed in this instance.
The statement noted: “The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been made aware of the purported expulsion of Hon. Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu from the party by the Umuopia/Umukegwu Ward Chapter in Imo State. The NWC declares this purported expulsion as null and void, as it does not align with the express provisions of Sections 57 (7) and 59 (3) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017) and the established rules of our esteemed party.”
Ologunagba highlighted that Section 57 (7) clearly states that “notwithstanding any other provision relating to discipline, no Executive Committee at any level, except the National Executive Committee, shall address any disciplinary matters concerning a member of the National Executive Committee, Deputy Governors, or members of the National Assembly.”
Similarly, Section 59 (3) specifies that “no Executive Committee at any level, except the National Executive Committee, shall handle any disciplinary issues regarding members of the National Executive Committee, President, Vice President, Governors, Deputy Governors, Ministers, Ambassadors, Special Advisers, or any member of the Legislative Houses.”
The PDP Publicity Secretary stressed that no ward, local government, or state chapter has the authority to suspend, expel, or discipline a National Assembly member without adhering to the proper procedures outlined in the party’s Constitution, which mandates consultation with the NWC.
The statement concluded, “The NWC firmly asserts that the PDP is a structured political party that operates under strict adherence to its Constitution and Rules and will not permit any individual or group at any level to breach these regulations. Hon. Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu remains a legitimate member of the PDP with all associated rights and privileges. The NWC urges all leaders, stakeholders, members, and supporters of the party in Imo State and beyond to disregard the purported expulsion and calls for unity among all party members in Imo State to work collaboratively for the benefit of the party and the populace.
