Police Disrupt Scheme To Sell Stolen Luxury Vehicle, Arrest Five Individuals
The Delta State Police Command has arrested five suspects involved in the theft of a luxury vehicle belonging to the logistics company Young Shall Grow Motors. The suspects were reportedly planning to dismantle the vehicle and sell the parts in Delta State…READ MORE…
During a press briefing, police spokesperson SP Edafe Bright described the case as “unique” due to the method employed in stealing the vehicle. Bright explained that the suspects took advantage of insider knowledge regarding the vehicle’s security systems.
“One of the suspects previously worked as a panel beater for Young Shall Grow. After his employment ended, he began monitoring where the company parked its vehicles in Abia State. He noticed they often left their doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition,” Bright stated.
The suspect allegedly contacted an accomplice, who then drove the stolen vehicle from Aba, Abia State, to Warri, Delta State, with plans to sell it to scrap dealers. However, the scheme was foiled thanks to preventive measures taken by the Divisional Police Officer in Ekpan, Delta State.
“The DPO had proactively warned scrap dealers against purchasing vehicles without proper documentation, leading them to request receipts and vehicle particulars before any transactions,” explained Bright.
This insistence on documentation raised suspicions and enabled the police to intercept the vehicle in a secluded area where the suspects had intended to dismantle it.
“Thanks to our intelligence gathering, we learned about their plan to move the vehicle to a remote location for dismantling. They were intercepted, and all five suspects were apprehended,” SP Bright added.
During questioning, one suspect, Michael Odubo, confessed to his involvement, revealing that he had spotted the vehicle while purchasing goods in Aba. “When I saw the vehicle, I contacted the driver and planned to drive it to Warri for sale,” Odubo stated.
When asked about the selling price, Odubo mentioned they planned to sell the vehicle for ₦5 million, despite the vehicle’s engine alone being valued at ₦13 million.
“Let it be known that there is no profit in criminal activity,” Bright cautioned. “At some point, you will get caught. These individuals were looking to trade a luxury vehicle worth much more for a mere ₦5 million.”
He also stressed the importance of self-vigilance, urging vehicle owners to take precautions to protect their assets. The suspects will face charges as the investigation continues.
Bright recognized the DPO’s proactive measures and encouraged the community to stay alert and report any suspicious behaviors. “Thanks to the DPO for advising car dealers not to buy vehicles without necessary documents. We must also remember not to leave vehicle keys in the ignition, as this can lead to theft. Police cannot be everywhere, so self-policing is essential.
