The National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) president, Hakeem Ambali, has called on President Bola Tinubu to prevent political interference in the implementation of local government autonomy. in the direct allocation of funds to local governments on the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).
Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling six months ago affirming the financial autonomy of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, the decision has yet to be fully implemented. The Supreme Court had directed that local government funds be paid directly into their accounts, barring governors from controlling these resources.
Ambali emphasized that the delay was due to FAAC’s failure to issue the necessary instructions, but assured that the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) is ready to comply. He urged the President to ensure the full implementation of the court’s ruling, which has already been delayed for too long.
“The Supreme Court’s judgment is clear. There should be no confusion. We are calling on President Tinubu to stand firm and make sure this judgment is fully implemented,” Ambali said. He added that the President should not allow any political group to obstruct the process.
A technical committee had already submitted the necessary documents for action to the President over a month ago, and NULGE remains hopeful that the President will push for the implementation to be completed without further delay.
