Onoh Sets The Record Straight: Tinubu Didn’t Authorize El-Rufai Criticism
Denge Josef Onoh, former spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu in the South East, has strongly condemned the recent online attacks against former Kaduna Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. El-Rufai has faced criticism after his remarks…Onoh Sets The Record Straight: Tinubu Didn’t Authorize El-Rufai Criticism
regarding President Tinubu’s railway project in Lagos, where he implied that “two wrongs do not make a right,” and advocated for sensible inclusion over exclusion. His comments were made while sharing an article by Nigerian professor Farooq Kperogi, accusing Tinubu of ethnic favoritism in his appointments, particularly at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPCL).
In response to the criticisms, former Senator Shehu Sani, representing Kaduna Central, accused El-Rufai of complaining because key federal appointments did not benefit him, highlighting that the former governor remained silent when President Muhammadu Buhari made similar ethnic-based appointments.
Sani also criticized El-Rufai’s tenure, alleging marginalization of Southern Kaduna under his rule. Bayo Onanuga, a presidential aide, further reacted to Sani’s remarks, framing the situation as a defense of President Tinubu.
Onoh, however, clarified that Onanuga’s response should not be misconstrued as an official presidential directive to insult El-Rufai. He emphasized that both President Tinubu and El-Rufai maintain a relationship beyond politics, founded on mutual respect and shared vision. Onoh reminded the public of El-Rufai’s significant contributions to Tinubu’s campaign and his support for a Southern president, despite the challenges he faced.
Acknowledging El-Rufai’s invaluable role during Tinubu’s campaign, Onoh expressed that the president holds the former governor in the highest esteem, recognizing his selflessness and unwavering dedication to the cause. He further stressed that political attacks on El-Rufai would not serve anyone’s interest, urging political actors to refrain from using the former governor’s name to gain favor with the president.
Onoh also stated that the Tinubu administration continues to recognize El-Rufai’s efforts, including his recent support for leadership initiatives at the Nigerian Customs and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). Despite the current online skirmishes, Onoh reiterated that true friendships, such as that between El-Rufai and Tinubu, are forged on sincerity, shared vision, and mutual respect, not on political appointments or public praise.
