No Split In Sight: Tinubu Denies Conflict With Governors Over Local Government Power
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has set the record straight, dispelling rumors of a disagreement with state governors regarding local government administration. Speaking during a New Year gathering with Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) at his Lagos residence, Tinubu emphasized his commitment to fostering cooperation with state leaders.
Addressing speculation that his administration intended to undermine the autonomy of local governments, the President clarified there were no conflicts with governors, urging them to focus on delivering transformative governance at the grassroots level. “There’s no dispute over local government autonomy,” Tinubu stated, stressing that collaboration was key to driving development and uplifting citizens’ lives.
Highlighting the pivotal role of governors in the country’s prosperity, Tinubu pointed out that local governance is vital to achieving food security, economic growth, and national development. He also called for stronger partnerships between federal and state governments to address pressing issues such as agricultural productivity, currency stability, and local governance reforms.
The President’s remarks come amid increasing focus on the economic and infrastructural progress achieved under his leadership. Tinubu reassured governors that his administration’s policies would continue to prioritize the welfare of the people, with a particular focus on agriculture, food security, and sustainable growth.
Tinubu also expressed his confidence in Nigeria’s future, stating, “I asked for this job, and Nigerians gave me the mandate. We’ll be on this journey together. Thank you for your support.”
The gathering also saw the President’s acknowledgment of ThisDAY newspaper’s recognition of his leadership as Man of the Year, which Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak of Kwara described as a significant endorsement of the administration’s progress.
As the year unfolds, Tinubu is set to visit Enugu State on January 4 as part of his nationwide outreach, reinforcing his commitment to building a prosperous and united Nigeria.
