Political Storm: HURIWA Supports Fubara’s Bold Budget As Wike’s Allies Take To The Streets
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has endorsed Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s 2025 budget presentation, despite protests from a faction of lawmakers loyal to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom…Political Storm: HURIWA Supports Fubara’s Bold Budget As Wike’s Allies Take To The Streets

In a statement released by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, the organization lauded Fubara for his unwavering commitment to constitutional principles and prioritizing the well-being of Rivers State residents. This approval came after a controversial budget presentation in late 2024, where Fubara unveiled a ₦1.188 trillion budget titled “Budget of Inclusive Growth and Development” to the Rivers State House of Assembly.
At the presentation, the governor highlighted key allocations, including over ₦195 billion for infrastructure, ₦31 billion for agriculture and youth farming initiatives, ₦63 billion for education, and ₦97.75 billion for healthcare. HURIWA expressed its approval of Fubara’s fiscal discipline, despite the political turmoil surrounding the presentation.
The statement criticized the 27 defected lawmakers, who had moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing them of political opportunism by opposing the budget. HURIWA also condemned the duplicity within Wike’s camp, highlighting his simultaneous affiliation with both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APC-led initiatives.
HURIWA also pointed to the legal aspect of the dispute, noting that the Rivers State High Court had declared the seats of the defected lawmakers vacant, following their switch to the APC. This decision was later upheld by the Court of Appeal, reinforcing the constitutional position that defected lawmakers should lose their seats.
Onwubiko praised Fubara for his focus on constitutional integrity, fiscal responsibility, and his efforts to provide for the people of Rivers State. HURIWA also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to swiftly conduct by-elections to fill the vacant seats in the state assembly, ensuring that democratic processes are not hindered.
In conclusion, HURIWA called for continued unity and support for Governor Fubara’s administration, highlighting his dedication to ensuring that Rivers State remains on the path of progress and prosperity.
