This development follows an order by Justice Ifeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court in Calabar, mandating the DSS and the state’s Attorney General to present the monarch in court on January 15, 2025.

Chief Iso’s legal troubles began after he won court cases concerning land and chieftaincy disputes against the Cross River State government. According to reports, he was forcibly taken from his residence on December 21, 2024, and is allegedly being held in a DSS facility. The monarch subsequently filed a suit to enforce his fundamental rights, including fair hearing, personal liberty, and freedom of movement.

However, DSS counsel I.N. Nwezor refuted these claims, stating, “The DSS has no knowledge of the Applicant, Chief Iso. He is not under our custody and is of no security interest to us. There was no petition against him, nor did the DSS arrest him.”

The Attorney General’s counsel, G.I. Okem, admitted awareness of a petition filed by Okimasi Ojong & Co on behalf of Nkonib (Ikot Ansa) Qua Clan. The petition accused Chief Iso and others of cultism, abduction, and attempted murder, raising questions about the basis of his alleged detention.

Justice Ojukwu has adjourned the case until February 18, 2025, leaving the public awaiting clarity on the monarch’s fate.
