defense session with the Senate Committee on Public Procurement in Abuja, Adedokun highlighted the bureau’s pivotal role in ensuring accountability in government contracts.

Established 17 years ago, the BPP has been instrumental in combating corruption tied to contract awards, inflated costs, and misappropriation of public funds.

“The BPP has saved Nigeria from losing at least ₦40 billion annually through rigorous price intelligence, contract monitoring, and ensuring fair practices. This has been achieved despite our lean workforce and limited resources,” Dr. Adedokun stated.

Landmark Achievements

The bureau’s price intelligence efforts have not only blocked financial leakages but also contributed significantly to the revenue of agencies like the Federal Inland Revenue Service and the Nigeria Pension Commission.

Budgetary Challenges

Despite its achievements, the BPP is grappling with financial constraints. The agency requested a ₦63.5 billion capital vote for 2025 but was allocated only ₦1.57 billion, a figure deemed insufficient to address pressing needs such as staff accommodations, new project-monitoring vehicles, and the long-awaited e-procurement system.

“The current allocation hampers our ability to effectively monitor over 800 government agencies,” Dr. Adedokun lamented, urging the Senate committee to approve funding for the recruitment of additional staff.

Senate’s Support

Senator Olajide Ipinsagba, chairing the committee, expressed sympathy for the bureau’s plight. He emphasized the importance of empowering the BPP to sustain its fight against corruption and inefficiency in public procurement.

“The bureau’s work is critical to national development, and we must ensure it has the necessary tools and personnel to succeed,” Senator Ipinsagba said.

The BPP remains a cornerstone in Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive, safeguarding public funds and ensuring transparency in governance.
