Government Areas, the team uncovered issues ranging from transportation difficulties to hunger as significant barriers to education.

Speaking on the findings, Mrs. Becky Wayas, a GONET leader, lamented:

“It’s alarming that parental attitudes and pupils’ deliberate absenteeism are fueling low attendance during the first week of resumption.”

Another GONET representative, Mr. Maina Benjamin, emphasized the need for collective action, stating:

“Reorientation programs, active participation by headteachers, and consistent monitoring are crucial to addressing these challenges.”

In their visits to Shango Idrisa Primary School and Orji Estate Nursery and Primary School, school officials identified additional concerns, including a shortage of teachers and a lack of parental commitment. Assistant Headmistress Hajiya Furera Ahmed also highlighted hunger and transportation difficulties as key issues affecting students.

“Most of our students are housemaids. Guardians need awareness campaigns on the importance of education,” she noted.

GONET has called on stakeholders, including parents, schools, and government agencies, to work together in ensuring accessible and quality education for every child in Gombe State.
