TCN’S BIG WIN: Eight Transmission Towers Relocated, Abuja Rejoices As Electricity Returns

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has accomplished the relocation of eight 132kV and 33kV transmission towers along the Kukwaba/Apo line, providing relief to residents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This significant milestone, completed three days after the initial deadline, signifies the full restoration of bulk power supply to the 132/33kV Apo Transmission Substation, facilitating normal electricity distribution in the affected regions.

The announcement was made in a statement by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, released on Friday.

Previously, on January 3, 2025, TCN announced that the relocation was essential due to the Federal Capital Development Authority’s (FCDA) road dualization project along the Apo axis. This endeavor required dismantling and reconstructing transmission towers as well as restringing power cables to pave the way for the roadworks.

The company had originally planned a two-week power outage from January 6 to January 20, occurring daily between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., to facilitate the relocation process. In its statement, TCN emphasized that this relocation was vital to support the FCDA’s infrastructure efforts, assuring residents that power would be restored promptly upon completion of the work.

Mbah expressed gratitude to the impacted customers for their patience during this period, highlighting that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has now resumed normal power supply to the serviced areas, effectively concluding the previously implemented load rationing.

The statement read, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria is pleased to announce the restoration of full bulk power to its 132/33kV Apo Transmission Substation, effective January 23, 2025. This restoration follows the successful relocation of eight towers along the Kukwaba/Apo 132kV line, facilitated by the FCDA’s road dualization project along the Apo axis.”

The relocation work, which commenced on January 6, 2025, involved dismantling and reconstructing the towers, along with restringing power cables.

“With the full restoration of bulk power, Abuja DisCo can now deliver normal electricity supply from the substation to customers in the affected regions, bringing an end to prior load rationing,” the statement continued. “TCN appreciates the understanding and patience of the electricity consumers affected during this time.”
