No More Chaos! Lagos Assembly Lawmakers Break Silence, Confirm Total Normalcy

Lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly have confirmed that calm has returned following recent leadership changes, with the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, now at the helm.

Ireporteronline recalls that the Assembly faced a leadership crisis after former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was removed in absentia on January 13, 2025, by 32 out of 40 members. His ousting stemmed from allegations of financial misappropriation, misconduct, and abuse of power.

Obasa’s removal sparked mixed reactions within the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC), causing a brief political stir among party loyalists and constituents in Agege, where Obasa represents.

However, as the House resumed its plenary session on February 6, 2025, with Speaker Meranda presiding, 36 lawmakers were in attendance, while Obasa was notably absent.

During the session, lawmakers praised the administration of President Bola Tinubu and his wife for their economic reforms, which they said have positively impacted Lagosians. Abiodun Tobun, representing Epe Constituency I, lauded federal efforts to curb insecurity in Lagos and proposed that the House send a formal letter of commendation to the President for his initiatives.

In anonymous comments to Vanguard, several lawmakers dismissed rumors of plans to impeach Speaker Meranda, asserting that the House is functioning smoothly.

“The Assembly is peaceful and everyone is going about their duties. Lawmakers are happy, and nobody is stirring up trouble,” they said.

One legislator humorously added, “It’s Friday, and soon, many will head to the Mosque. Ignore the rumors about impeaching Madam Speaker. This morning, both Speaker Meranda and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited LTV 8 together.”
