During a press briefing following the coup, Nzeogwu reportedly told officers in Kaduna that the military had taken control of Nigeria to rid the country of corruption. However, details of the killings across Kaduna, Lagos, and Ibadan soon emerged, revealing the deaths of Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Finance Minister Festus Okotie-Eboh, and several senior military officers.

Babangida’s account sheds new light on the motivations and justifications given by the coup plotters, reigniting discussions about the impact of the 1966 coup on Nigeria’s history.
