NLC Threatens Strike Over Unpaid Local Government Workers Salaries In Rivers

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State has strongly criticized the non-payment of salaries to local government workers since February 2025. The union has warned that failure to settle the outstanding salaries by the end of March will force them to withdraw services.

In a press briefing on Thursday in Port Harcourt, Rivers NLC Chairman Alex Agwanwor expressed the union’s frustration with the situation. “We demand the immediate payment of all local government workers’ salaries by March 31, and the enforcement of the minimum wage across all local government areas by then,” Agwanwor stated.

Agwanwor also reaffirmed the NLC’s alignment with the national leadership on the ongoing state of emergency in Rivers State. He stressed that workers should not be made to bear the brunt of the state’s political turmoil, as the executive has resolved that Rivers workers remain non-partisan and should not suffer amid the political crisis.

Local government workers, in particular, have not received their salaries since February, further exacerbating the financial hardships faced by workers in the state. Agwanwor reiterated the union’s demand for immediate payment of all outstanding wages and the implementation of the minimum wage law at the local government level.

“Local government workers have not been paid since February. We demand immediate payment and the full implementation of the minimum wage by the end of this month,” he added.

He concluded by stating that the NLC will mobilize workers and begin the process of service withdrawal if their demands are not met. Agwanwor urged the state government to prioritize the welfare of workers and ensure they are not adversely affected by the ongoing political crisis.
