Residents Raise Alarm Over Safety As Stray Bullets Hit Woman, Houses Near Army Shooting Range

Residents of 10 communities near the Odogbo Cantonment of the Nigerian Army in Ibadan have expressed concerns over their safety after stray bullets from the Army’s shooting range hit a woman and damaged at least 15 houses. The residents, numbering around 5,000, reported that they have been seeking help from the federal government since 2017, but their concerns have not been addressed. In a statement, community representatives—including Prince Ijeru, Mr. Adekunle Taiwo, Mrs. Odekunle, Mr. Qozeem Alayo, Mr. Abdrauf, and Iya Eleedu—highlighted that, unlike previous training exercises where the Army provided advance notice, the current exercise, which began on March 17, 2025, was not publicized.

They explained, “Two days into the exercise, a woman in her shop was struck by a stray bullet and had to be rushed to the Military Hospital in the Barracks.” Additionally, at least 15 houses were damaged by stray bullets during this exercise, which has raised serious concerns among the residents about their safety.
