Cooking Gas Prices Fall As Supply Improves

According to Ireporter Online, households in several parts of Nigeria are beginning to experience some relief as the retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, records a downward trend following improved supply conditions and easing depot prices.

Market data from gas marketers indicates that prices have started to decline in major cities after weeks of sharp increases, although the reduction remains uneven across different regions of the country.

Findings show that cooking gas currently sells between ₦1,100 and ₦1,350 per kilogramme in Lagos, Ibadan, and Abeokuta, while consumers in Benin City, Port Harcourt, and Warri purchase at between ₦1,150 and ₦1,400 per kilogramme. In Onitsha and Enugu, prices range from ₦1,200 to ₦1,450 per kilogramme, whereas residents of Abuja pay between ₦1,250 and ₦1,500 per kilogramme.

The National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, Edu Inyang, disclosed that northern cities such as Kano and Kaduna currently record prices between ₦1,300 and ₦1,550 per kilogramme, while Maiduguri and parts of the North-East still experience rates as high as ₦1,650 per kilogramme. He added that the national retail range now stands between approximately ₦1,100 and ₦1,650 per kilogramme.

Inyang explained that the variation in prices is influenced by factors such as transportation costs, distance from depots, and retailer margins, noting that some neighbourhood retailers may still charge slightly above the average range due to logistics challenges. He further stated that improved LPG supply and softer depot prices toward the end of June 2026 have contributed to the recent price adjustments across markets.

Based on current market rates, refilling a 5kg cylinder now costs between ₦5,500 and ₦8,250, while a 6kg cylinder goes for between ₦6,600 and ₦9,900. A 12.5kg cylinder refill is estimated to cost between ₦13,750 and ₦20,625, depending on location and retailer pricing.

The National Chairman of the LPG Retailers Branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Ayobami Olarinoye, noted that normalcy is gradually returning to the sector as supply improves. He stated that marketers currently purchase LPG at between ₦1,300 and ₦1,500 per kilogramme and sell to consumers at between ₦1,600 and ₦1,800 per kilogramme, depending on location.

Marketers have expressed optimism that sustained domestic supply and steady imports could further reduce prices in the coming weeks, provided there are no disruptions in the supply chain.
