US Senator Breaks Senate Record With 25-Hour Speech Opposing Trump Policies
In an unprecedented demonstration of stamina, U.S. Senator Cory Booker delivered the longest speech in Senate history, speaking for over 25 hours to protest what he termed as President Donald Trump’s “unconstitutional” actions. Booker’s relentless speech, reminiscent of the iconic filibuster scene from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), required him to remain standing without taking a break….READ MORE….
The effort broke the previous record set by Strom Thurmond, who spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes while opposing the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Reflecting on the historic moment, Booker remarked to MSNBC that Thurmond’s record had always troubled him, as it represented an attempt to exclude people like himself from the Senate.
A Stand for Democracy
As Booker neared the record-breaking point, fellow Democratic lawmakers gathered in the Senate chamber to show support, while most Republicans remained absent. Addressing the gravity of the moment, Booker declared, “This is a moral moment. It’s not left or right. It’s right or wrong.” Citing his mentor, civil rights leader John Lewis, he urged Americans to embrace “good trouble” before concluding his speech.
Despite the physical demands, Booker maintained his composure and even injected humor, joking about the “biological urgencies” he was experiencing as the speech progressed.
Criticism of Trump’s Administration
Booker, a former presidential candidate, began his speech at 7:00 PM on Monday and continued uninterrupted until 8:05 PM on Tuesday. Though the speech did not technically obstruct Senate proceedings, it served as a symbolic call to action for Democrats opposed to Trump’s administration.
He condemned the president’s aggressive policies, including drastic budget cuts and executive overreach. Booker specifically criticized Elon Musk, Trump’s top advisor, for implementing sweeping changes to government programs without congressional consent. He argued that Trump’s leadership had caused significant harm to American democracy, citing increased hardships for citizens and the erosion of key institutions.
Enduring Physical Challenges
Following the lengthy speech, Booker shared the strategy that helped him endure the challenge: fasting from food starting Friday and refraining from drinking the night before his speech on Monday. Though this approach helped him manage the physical strain, it led to muscle cramps and dehydration.
After the speech, Booker admitted feeling “tired and a little hoarse” but remained steadfast in his commitment to delivering his message.
A Symbolic Victory
With Democrats in the minority in both the Senate and the House, Booker’s speech symbolized resistance against Trump’s controversial policies, including reducing government size, increasing deportations, and undermining political norms. Senator Raphael Warnock commended Booker’s dedication, expressing gratitude for his “vigil for this country.”
Throughout his address, Booker not only criticized Trump’s actions but also recited poetry, discussed sports, and engaged with colleagues to maintain momentum. His record-breaking effort now stands as a defining moment in Senate history, a symbolic protest highlighting the fight for democracy.
