Security Operatives Lockdown Uromi Following Killings
BENIN CITY – In response to the recent killing of 16 northern travelers by a mob, security operatives, including police, military, and plainclothes officers, have secured key locations in Uromi, the administrative center of Esan North East Local Government Area, Edo State. The heightened security presence is aimed at preventing possible retaliatory attacks, as residents express growing concerns about potential reprisals….READ MORE….
Residents are now increasingly wary of discussing the incident with unfamiliar individuals, especially following the arrest of at least 14 people, reportedly detained at random in connection with the incident. Many locals believe that the persistent activities of kidnappers, which have plagued Edo Central Senatorial District and its bordering areas, may have provoked the mob’s actions, though they acknowledge that such violence is not justified.
FCID Assumes Investigation
In addition to police deployments, military vehicles have been observed patrolling the vicinity of the highway and other potential hotspots to monitor movements and maintain order. Plainclothes security personnel have also been noted, further heightening residents’ apprehensions towards strangers.
The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) has taken over the case, as confirmed by Moses Yamu, the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer. Yamu stated that while the local command remains committed to maintaining peace, the investigation has been handed over to Force Headquarters.
Banking Services Remain Uncertain
Commercial banks in the area have been operating cautiously since the incident, with some providing only limited services due to fears of retaliatory violence. A local banker, who requested anonymity, revealed that banking operations would continue to be closely monitored and adjusted based on security updates.
Lingering Fears and Concerns
Despite interventions by Governor Monday Okpebholo, including the suspension of the local vigilante head and a condolence visit to the Kano State government and victims’ families, fear remains prevalent among Uromi residents. Business owners and community members remain uncertain about when or how retaliatory attacks might occur.
Community Reactions
The Igbo Community Association has condemned the killings, describing them as tragic and unjustifiable. They called for decisive government action against jungle justice, emphasizing the sanctity of human life. Similarly, a civil society group, the Civil Society Organization on Community Advancement and Humanitarian Empowerment Initiative (CSCHEI), has urged the federal government to address the rising violence and insecurity, demanding a transparent investigation into the incident and support for the victims’ families.
While the local administration and community leaders work to restore calm, heightened security measures are expected to continue in Uromi and surrounding areas to forestall any further unrest.
