The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has publicly disowned the Lagos Federal Controller of Works, Olukorede Kesha, regarding the controversial closure of the Independence Bridge in Lagos. Umahi revealed that he had no prior knowledge of the directive to shut down the bridge, adding that Kesha acted independently in making the decision.

The closure, which was initially expected to last until May, caused significant disruptions, with commuters enduring long hours stuck in traffic. However, following widespread public outcry, the Minister visited the site and assured Lagos residents that the bridge would reopen by Friday afternoon, much sooner than originally expected.

Umahi emphasized that work would continue into the night to restore the bridge, noting that while the current repairs were 50% complete, they may evolve into a more permanent solution. He reassured commuters that they would be able to use the bridge by 3 PM that day, thanking the public for their patience.
