“Cross River Is Open For Business – Gov Otu Woos Diaspora With Bold Investment Pitch!”

The Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, has passionately urged indigenes living abroad to return home and invest in the state’s future.

This call was made during the maiden diaspora convention themed “Diaspora Contribution to the Development and Sustainability of Cross River State” held over the weekend in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

According to IReporter Online, the governor emphasized the importance of diaspora involvement in transforming the state’s economic and social landscape, encouraging participants to build in their local communities and contribute to a legacy of sustainable development.

Describing the event as a symbolic yet strategic milestone, Governor Otu said the convention marked a new era of collaboration between the state government and its global citizens.

He stated, “My dear brothers and sisters in the diaspora, this gathering is not just ceremonial—it is the bridge we have built together, and I am here to walk it with you.”

The governor praised the enduring connection of Cross Riverians abroad to their roots, adding, “Your hearts remain anchored in Calabar, Obubra, Obudu, and every inch of our soil. Cross River needs you now more than ever.”

He noted that under his ‘People First’ administration, the state was creating avenues for diaspora engagement in policy shaping, education, healthcare, mentorship, and investment.

“Your experience, capital, and talents must come home to fuel our growth,” he urged.

According to IReporter Online, the convention attracted delegates from North America, Europe, Asia, and other parts of Africa, all united by their commitment to the state’s progress.

The governor also announced the establishment of a Diaspora Engagement and Development Desk to coordinate and fast-track collaborative projects across sectors.

In a touching moment, Governor Otu—after receiving an award from Birmingham Mayor Zafar Iqbal—declared, “You are not observers; you are stakeholders. Let Birmingham be the beginning of your return—not just to visit, but to rebuild.”

His wife, Bishop Eyoanwan Otu, also addressed the crowd, calling on diaspora women to champion girl-child education and maternal healthcare. “Every girl from Cross River deserves a sister in the diaspora,” she said.

Christopher Lekan, President of the Cross River State Diaspora Forum, hailed the event as a powerful step forward. He applauded the governor for reconnecting the state with its global citizens.

According to IReporter Online, Lekan announced plans for a Diaspora Investment Fund to drive development in health, ICT, and youth entrepreneurship. “We’re no longer content with sending remittances,” he concluded.

“We’re bringing back innovation, capital, and vision.”
