PSC Sanctions Promotion Of 775 Senior Police Officers To Advanced Ranks

The promotion exercise, which took place on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, involved written examinations and oral interviews and was supervised by the Chairman of the Commission, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Hashimu Salihu Argungu.

Among the senior officers elevated was Assistant Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Usman Gumel, who was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police. Prior to his elevation, Gumel served as the AIG in charge of the Community Policing Project Department, Research and Planning, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The Commission also approved the promotion of seven Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police. Those elevated include Ihebom Chukwuma of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja; Maxwell Olatokunbo of the K9 Unit; Abaniwonda Olufemi of Delta State Command; Alonyenu Francis Idu of Bayelsa State Command; Lawal B. Ayodeji of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, FCID Annex Lagos; Agene Emmanuel of FCID Kaduna; and Vungmoh S. M. Kwaimo of the Railway Command.

In addition, thirteen Deputy Commissioners of Police were promoted to Commissioners of Police across various commands and formations nationwide. Thirty Assistant Commissioners of Police were also elevated to the rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police, while fifty-one Chief Superintendents of Police were promoted to Assistant Commissioners of Police.

Further approvals included the promotion of 542 Superintendents of Police to the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police, 119 Deputy Superintendents of Police to Superintendents of Police, and 12 Assistant Superintendents of Police to Deputy Superintendents of Police.

A statement issued by the Head of Protocol and Public Affairs of the Commission noted that the promotions were based strictly on merit, performance, and adherence to established procedures.

While congratulating the newly promoted officers, the PSC Chairman urged them to approach their new responsibilities with renewed dedication and professionalism. He emphasized that promotion comes with increased expectations, calling on the officers to intensify efforts in protecting lives and property, maintaining law and order, and delivering effective policing across the country.

DIG Argungu further reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to regular and merit-driven promotions in line with global best practices within the Nigeria Police Force.
