Alleged Christian Genocide: Senior US Government Officials Visit Nigeria
A high-level delegation from the United States government is set to visit Nigeria this week as part of intensified bilateral cooperation aimed at strengthening security, counterterrorism efforts, and the protection of vulnerable communities. The delegation will be led by Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker, who will serve as head of the U.S.-Nigeria Joint Working Group during engagements in Abuja.
According to an official statement, Hooker’s visit to Nigeria is the first leg of a broader diplomatic tour that will also include Oman, Bahrain, and Italy from January 21 to 29. In Nigeria, the delegation is expected to hold high-level discussions with government officials on enhancing cooperation to address terrorism and instability, expand U.S. investment opportunities, and support efforts to safeguard Christian communities across the country.
The U.S. State Department statement highlighted that the visit aligns with ongoing initiatives to deepen strategic dialogue and joint action on security challenges in West Africa. Following engagements in Abuja, Hooker is scheduled to lead strategic talks in Muscat and Manama on regional security and economic interests, before proceeding to Rome, where she will meet with international counterparts on wider global priorities including geopolitical conflicts and humanitarian cooperation.
The timing of the visit comes amid heightened international focus on insecurity in Nigeria, particularly concerns raised by U.S. officials about the safety of Christian communities and the broader impact of terrorism on civilian populations. Nigerian and American authorities have underscored the importance of collaborative frameworks such as the U.S.-Nigeria Joint Working Group to coordinate efforts in combating violent extremism and improving protective measures across affected regions.
