Heartbreaking: Nigerian Woman D!es Just Hours After Arriving In UK For Son’s Graduation
A Nigerian woman, Oluranti Akinyemi, has tragically passed away in the United Kingdom shortly after arriving for her son’s graduation ceremony. According to reports, Akinyemi, a mother of four, travelled to the UK on February 11 to attend a graduation scheduled for February 18.
A fundraising appeal on JustGiving stated that she suffered a sudden cardiac arrest less than 20 hours after her arrival. She was rushed to Luton and Dunstable Hospital, where she remained on life support for three days before being declared clinically dead.
A UK-based social media user who shared the fundraising link confirmed that Akinyemi suffered the cardiac arrest on February 12, was in a coma for three days, and was pronounced dead on February 14, 2026.
The fundraising campaign aims to raise £20,000 to repatriate her remains to Nigeria and cover related expenses. As of Wednesday, £2,087 had been contributed by 97 donors. In the appeal, Adekunle Ogundana wrote, “Help us bring our sister, mother, friend and beloved home, Mrs. Oluranti Olufunmilayo Esther Akinyemi (née Oluwalana/Ogundana).”
Her family described the incident as sudden and devastating, noting that the funds are urgently needed to repatriate her body, settle outstanding medical bills in the UK, and cover funeral costs.
In the wake of the incident, social media users urged travelers to take precautionary health measures when visiting abroad, especially elderly relatives. Recommendations included staying hydrated, avoiding excessive alcohol and caffeine, moving during long flights, and using compression socks to improve circulation.
Some users recounted similar tragedies, emphasizing the risks associated with sudden health complications during travel. Others called for stronger collaboration between health authorities and the aviation industry to address travel-related medical emergencies, suggesting that specialized teams be established to provide guidance and preventive measures.
