According to Ireporter Online, the Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has formally resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and announced his immediate defection to the Labour Party (LP), citing ongoing legal disputes affecting the stability of his former party.

In a statement released on Monday, Abaribe explained that his decision was driven by what he described as “uncertainties” within the ADC, particularly multiple court cases and conflicting judgments surrounding the party’s structure and legitimacy.

“Given the uncertainties concerning the ADC with regard to multiple lawsuits and court judgments, I have today resigned from the party and joined the Labour Party effectively immediately,” he stated.

He, however, emphasized that his departure was not influenced by any personal disagreement with the leadership or members of the ADC, stressing that he maintained cordial relations with them.

“This has nothing to do with the leadership and members, whom I have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy a close and solid relationship,” he added.

The former Minority Leader noted that political leadership often demands difficult choices, especially in moments of uncertainty, and expressed appreciation to ADC members for their support during his brief stay in the party. He did not, however, disclose his specific political direction within the Labour Party going forward.

Abaribe’s latest move comes just weeks after he left the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the ADC, a decision that had previously stirred political reactions within the Senate. His earlier defection had also triggered controversy, with some lawmakers questioning its constitutional validity and urging the Senate leadership to declare his seat vacant, arguing that no internal crisis existed within APGA to justify his departure.
