Inside IGP Disu’s Emergency Meeting With Top Police Chiefs

According to Ireporter Online, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Tuesday, 5th May 2026, held an emergency conference with senior strategic leadership of the Nigeria Police Force at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The high-level meeting brought together members of the Force Management Team, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, and Commissioners of Police, with members of the press also in attendance.

The session was convened to review pressing national security challenges, strengthen internal accountability mechanisms, and issue fresh operational directives to police formations across the country. This was contained in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid.

In his remarks, the Inspector-General stressed the importance of discipline, transparency, and responsible leadership at all levels of command. He noted that the changing security environment requires a more proactive, intelligence-driven, and accountable policing strategy nationwide.

The police chief also addressed the recent extra-judicial killing incident in Delta State, describing it as unacceptable, unlawful, and contrary to the standards of the Nigeria Police Force. He confirmed that the officers involved have been dismissed from service, while their case has been forwarded for criminal prosecution. He reaffirmed the Force’s zero-tolerance policy on misconduct, insisting that no officer is above the law.

Providing an operational update for April 2026, the IGP disclosed that intelligence-led operations across the country led to the arrest of 28 suspected terrorists, 51 murder suspects, 62 armed robbery suspects, 85 kidnapping suspects, and 54 suspected cultists. He added that 189 kidnapped victims were rescued, while 140 firearms, 1,074 rounds of ammunition, and 37 stolen vehicles were recovered.

As part of ongoing reforms, the IGP announced the creation of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), a new tactical formation designed to improve the Force’s capacity to respond to serious and violent crimes. He explained that the unit will operate strictly on intelligence-based deployment and will be backed by specialized training, human rights compliance frameworks, and strict accountability measures, with Commissioners of Police responsible for its oversight.

He further directed Commissioners of Police across the country to deepen community policing efforts through regular engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders. He also instructed that contact details of senior officers be made accessible to community leaders to improve communication and public trust.

The Inspector-General reiterated that the ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force are aimed at strengthening professionalism, discipline, human rights adherence, and public accountability, supported by complaint response mechanisms such as the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU).

The Nigeria Police Force, according to the statement, remains committed to institutional reform, improved operational efficiency, and the protection of lives, rights, and property across the country.
