Iheanacho Nets Wonder Goal As Celtic Clinch Scottish Cup Double
Kelechi Iheanacho delivered a superb performance from the bench as Celtic defeated Dunfermline Athletic 3-1 at Hampden Park on Saturday to claim a record-extending 63rd Scottish Cup title.
According to reports, the Nigerian forward sealed the victory with a brilliant solo goal in the 72nd minute after latching onto a pass from Benjamin Nygren. Iheanacho dribbled past three defenders before calmly slotting the ball home to put the result beyond doubt.
The goal marked his third in seven appearances since regaining top form in April, following his earlier brace against St Mirren that helped Celtic secure a place in the final.
Daizen Maeda had given Celtic the lead in the 19th minute with a composed finish over goalkeeper Aston Oxborough, while Arne Engels doubled the advantage before halftime with a powerful strike from distance.
Dunfermline Athletic managed to pull one back late in the game through Josh Cooper, but Celtic maintained control throughout the contest to secure a ninth consecutive victory in all competitions.
The win also confirmed a third straight domestic double for the club under interim manager Martin O’Neill, whose return during a difficult campaign has now produced nine major trophies across two spells spanning more than two decades.
Iheanacho’s latest success further adds to his impressive trophy collection. The 29-year-old forward has now won six major honours in his senior career, including the English FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield, Championship title, Scottish Premiership, and Scottish Cup.
The striker also strengthened his reputation as a specialist in cup competitions after previously becoming the highest FA Cup scorer since his debut in the tournament in 2016, a feat that earned him the nickname “Mr FA Cup.”
Despite ending the season strongly, uncertainty still surrounds Iheanacho’s future at Celtic. The Nigerian attacker signed a one-year contract last summer and is expected to become a free agent at the end of the campaign, although his recent performances could influence the club’s decision on a possible extension.
