Ijebuland Shuts Down In Grand Style As Ojude Oba Festival Holds Today

The Ojude Oba Festival has continued to strengthen its reputation as one of Nigeria’s biggest cultural and tourism events, drawing thousands of visitors from across the world to Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. According to cultural tourism reports, the annual celebration has grown far beyond its traditional roots, becoming a major platform for showcasing Yoruba heritage, unity, and economic potential.

Held on the third day after Eid-el-Kabir, the colourful festival is renowned for its spectacular displays of fashion, music, horse riding, and cultural performances. The event features the beautifully dressed regberegbe age groups alongside the famous Balogun warrior families, whose horseback parades remain one of the festival’s major highlights.

Observers noted that the festival gained wider international recognition during the reign of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, whose leadership helped transform Ojude Oba into a globally celebrated cultural brand. Under his reign, the festival attracted increased corporate sponsorship, global media coverage, and a surge in tourist participation before his passing in July 2025.

Despite concerns surrounding the absence of a substantive Awujale, organisers confirmed that the 2026 edition of the festival will proceed as scheduled. Speaking during a press briefing in Ijebu-Ode, the Coordinator of the Ojude Oba Festival Organising Committee, Chief Fassy Adetokunboh Yusuf, stated that the celebration represents the collective identity, history, and pride of the Ijebu people.

He explained that suspending the event because of developments within the traditional institution could negatively affect tourism, the local economy, and the international reputation of Ijebuland. Tourism experts also described the festival as one of Nigeria’s most valuable cultural assets, noting that it continues to compete favourably with major heritage festivals across Africa.

Reports further indicated that the annual celebration generates significant economic activities for hotels, transport operators, restaurants, photographers, fashion designers, event planners, and local traders, while also boosting destination marketing for Nigeria.

Beyond its economic value, the festival has remained a strong symbol of cultural diplomacy, with colourful outfits, traditional music, intricate beadwork, and grand horse processions frequently dominating social media and attracting global attention.

The event also serves as a reunion point for Ijebu indigenes in the diaspora, many of whom return home yearly to participate in the celebration and contribute to community development efforts.

Stakeholders believe the continuation of the festival despite recent changes within the traditional institution demonstrates the resilience of culture as a major driver of tourism, identity, and unity. Expectations remain high that this year’s edition will once again deliver the glamour, elegance, and cultural richness that have made Ojude Oba one of Africa’s most admired festivals.
