Nollywood Thrown Into Mourning As Patrick Okoye Passes Away

The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor and lecturer Patrick Okoye.

Reports circulating on social media confirmed the actor’s passing after a post appeared on his official Instagram page bearing his photograph alongside the inscription, “Rest in peace, legend.”

Okoye, widely known by fans and colleagues as “Energy,” was a respected academic in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State. He gained prominence in Nollywood for his remarkable interpretation of traditional roles and his strong stage presence in several productions.

Reacting to the tragic development, Nollywood actor Ken Erics described the late actor’s death as a painful loss to the creative industry. In an emotional tribute shared online, Erics revealed that he had spoken with Okoye less than 24 hours before receiving news of his demise.

According to him, the late actor had appeared healthy and cheerful during their conversation, making the news even more shocking. He noted that receiving a call from Okoye’s phone shortly after the devastating announcement left him speechless.

Erics further credited the deceased for shaping his career path, disclosing that Okoye played a significant role in encouraging him to study Theatre Arts at the university level. He recalled how the late actor mentored young talents, nurtured aspiring performers and contributed immensely to the growth of many successful entertainers in the industry.

The actor also reminisced about joining Okoye for movie auditions while still a student, describing the late filmmaker as a passionate mentor whose guidance and encouragement left a lasting impact on his life and career.

Describing Okoye as a complete entertainer, Erics praised his exceptional abilities as an actor, dancer, singer and teacher, adding that he inspired many students through theatre productions and music projects. He said the late actor was among the first to introduce him to professional music recording sessions.

He lamented that the entertainment industry had lost a rare gem and prayed for comfort for the family, friends and loved ones left behind by the deceased.

Before his death, Okoye featured in several Nollywood productions, including Onye Ozil, The Duplex, Midnight Love, Old School, Finding a Wife, The Lion, The Jagaban and Over My Dead Body.
