How Asar Sesugh D!ed After Escaping EFCC Custody

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has provided further details on the circumstances surrounding the death of Asar Michael Sesugh, insisting that the deceased did not die while in its custody.

According to Ireporter Online, the anti-graft agency explained in a statement issued on Saturday that Sesugh was among 26 suspected cyber fraudsters arrested by operatives of its Makurdi Zonal Directorate in Benue State on April 28, 2026. The suspects were reportedly remanded in custody after the Commission secured a Magistrate Court order to facilitate ongoing investigations.

The EFCC disclosed that on May 4, three of the suspects requested permission to use the restroom at the holding facility. The request was granted, but the suspects allegedly exploited the opportunity by breaking through the toilet roof and escaping from detention. Despite several efforts by security operatives, they remained at large.

The Commission stated that new intelligence received on May 21 indicated that Sesugh was hiding in the Kansho area of Makurdi. Acting on the information, EFCC operatives moved to the location, where they allegedly came under attack from Sesugh and suspected cult members who opened fire on them.

The operatives reportedly responded in self-defence, leading to an exchange of gunfire during which the suspects fled the scene. The agency said Sesugh was later found lying by the roadside in a pool of blood and was immediately taken to the Police Cottage Hospital at the Police Headquarters in Makurdi, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.

The EFCC noted that the incident has been officially reported to the Benue State Police Command, which has commenced investigations to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death while continuing efforts to apprehend other fleeing suspects.

Reaffirming its position, the Commission maintained that Sesugh was neither on bail nor did he die while in EFCC custody. It also expressed condolences to the deceased’s family while reiterating its commitment to safeguarding its personnel and facilities against attacks and security breaches, stressing that it would continue to discharge its responsibilities in the interest of the nation.
