According to Ireporter Online, Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has dismissed reports claiming that he was rejected by the Mexican government, explaining that his delay in assuming duty is due to ongoing international engagements surrounding the World Cup currently being hosted jointly by Mexico and the United States.

Omokri made this clarification on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he described the rejection claims as false and politically motivated. He stated that Mexico is presently focused on hosting the global football tournament and has not turned down his diplomatic appointment.

“Mexico has not rejected me. Not at all. You should understand that Mexico is right now hosting the World Cup, along with the United States of America, and all of their focus is on that,” he said.

He further noted that several other Nigerian ambassadors are yet to resume at their respective postings, stressing that his situation is not unique.

“Most of us ambassadors have not resumed. So, I’m not the only one. A lot of my colleagues are in my situation, but it’s okay. These things happen,” Omokri added.

The former presidential aide also alleged that the opposition is responsible for spreading claims of his rejection, insisting that such narratives do not reflect reality.

“The opposition will always say things like I have been rejected. We do not work on the basis of the opposition. We work on the basis of reality,” he said, adding that Nigeria continues to maintain diplomatic relations with countries that respect its envoys.
