Kano State To Spend ₦1.5 Billion On Mass Wedding Program

The Commander-General of the Hisbah Board in Kano State, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this while briefing journalists on ongoing preparations for the initiative.

He stated that the allocated funds would cover the provision of furniture, food items, dowries, clothing materials for couples, and a ₦100,000 capital support package for each bride, alongside other associated expenses under the programme.

“The Kano State Government is to spend ₦1.5bn on the entire mass wedding programme which will soon be conducted in the state,” Daurawa said.

He further explained that the Hisbah Board, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health, has commenced mandatory medical screening for prospective couples to determine their fitness for marriage. The screening includes tests for hepatitis, HIV, pregnancy, genotype compatibility, and other sexually transmitted infections.

Daurawa noted that over 5,000 applicants had applied for the programme, out of which 3,000 would be selected after the screening exercise is concluded.

He also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for initiating the scheme, adding that the governor is expected to announce the official date for the mass wedding ceremony.

Medical screening for participants reportedly began on Monday, May 8, 2026, covering applicants from 24 out of the 44 local government areas in the state.
