FG Plans Frontline Access For Journalists In Military Operations

The Federal Government has disclosed that it is considering a new policy that would allow journalists to be embedded with military personnel during selected operations, in a move aimed at improving security reporting and enhancing public understanding of ongoing counter-insurgency efforts.

According to Ireporter Online, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), made this known on Thursday during the National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Abuja. He was represented at the event by his Special Adviser, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole.

The Defence Minister explained that the proposal is designed to strengthen collaboration between the media and security agencies while promoting transparency in military operations. He noted that journalists now play a crucial role in shaping public perception of national security issues, stressing that modern security management extends beyond the battlefield to include information control and public engagement.

He was quoted as saying that the media has become a stabilising force in governance, highlighting the importance of accurate and responsible reporting in maintaining national stability. He added that effective security communication is key to building public confidence in the efforts of security agencies.

The ministry further revealed that modalities are being considered to embed journalists within military formations during operations, enabling firsthand reporting and a better understanding of operational realities. The initiative, according to him, is part of broader efforts to improve engagement between the armed forces and the press, as well as ensure that security-related information is accurately conveyed to the public.

Gen. Musa also emphasised that the success of military operations should not only be measured by tactical outcomes but also by the level of trust citizens have in security institutions. He maintained that stronger cooperation between journalists and the military would help counter misinformation, improve public awareness, and contribute to more effective national security outcomes.

The proposal comes amid ongoing security challenges in parts of the country, including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
