Oyigbo DPO Removed By Rivers CP Amid Alleged ₦500,000 Extortion Scandal
The Rivers State Police Command has removed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Oyigbo Division following allegations of extortion and abuse of office, as authorities commence an investigation into the claims.
Reports indicate that the decision followed accusations made by a human rights advocate, who alleged that the officer collected ₦500,000 from an individual said to have been arrested and detained without any known offence. The activist reportedly shared evidence of the payment on social media, drawing widespread attention to the matter.
The advocate also accused the officer of initiating what was described as an unusual charge against a woman during a dispute involving her estranged husband. According to the claims, the woman was accused of stealing her own children and was subsequently remanded in a correctional facility, a development that attracted criticism from rights groups and members of the public.
In a statement issued by the Rivers State Police Command, spokesperson Blessing Agabe confirmed that the command had taken note of the allegations and had immediately relieved the officer of his duties pending the outcome of an investigation.
The statement noted that the action was taken to ensure a transparent, impartial and thorough probe into the complaints, while reaffirming the command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability and ethical conduct.
Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju was said to have expressed concern over the allegations, stressing that the command would not condone misconduct, abuse of office or any action capable of eroding public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
The police command further assured residents that the investigation would be conducted diligently and fairly, adding that appropriate measures would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
