Lagos, Osun Communities Experience Blackout Following Heavy Downpour, Floods

According to Ireporter Online, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) and the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) confirmed that the outages were caused by weather-related incidents and challenges on the national power grid.

In a statement released on Wednesday, EKEDC disclosed that electricity supply to its network had been reduced following faults on the Oshogbo-Ikeja 330kV transmission line and the Benin-Egbin 330kV transmission line.

The development resulted in reduced power allocation from the national grid and forced the company to implement load shedding across some of its service areas.

Among the affected locations in Lagos are Chevy View Estate, Chevron Drive, Agungi, Alpha Beach, Ikate, Elegushi, Carlton Gate, Kusenla, Victory Park Estate, Oniru, Maroko, Muri Okunola, Ajose Adeogun, Ligali Ayorinde, and parts of Aboyade Cole.

Other affected communities include Morinho Drive, Landmark Road, Igbo Efon, Lekki Tollgate 2, Igbokusu, Gbangbala, Platinum Way, Jakande/Coastal Road, OADC/Mayegun, Ajiran environs, Chevron Alternative Area, and Osapa London.

EKEDC explained that the power disruption was linked to a grid failure, noting that the affected transmission lines were responsible for the reduction in electricity supply to its network.

“Some business units may experience load shedding due to grid disruption. The Osogbo/Ikeja 330kV line is down, and the Benin/Egbin 330kV line is also down, resulting in reduced grid allocation,” the company stated.

The electricity provider, however, assured customers that it was working closely with the national grid operator to restore normal supply once the damaged transmission lines are repaired.

“We are in constant contact with the national grid operator and will restore supply as soon as the lines are back. Thank you for your patience,” EKEDC added.

Meanwhile, IBEDC attributed power outages recorded in some Osun communities to flooding at the Ilerin Injection Substation caused by a heavy windstorm.

The company said the incident affected the Isare 11kV, Irogbo 11kV, and Mount Carmel 11kV feeders, disrupting electricity supply to communities including Ifewara, Iwara, Bolorunduro, Irogbo, Ayeso, Odo-Oro, Wesley, Express Area, Ilerin, Irojo, Olomilagbala, Iwikun, Isare, and neighbouring areas.

IBEDC assured residents that its technical team was working to resolve the issue and restore electricity as quickly as possible.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience. Our technical team is working to ensure power supply is restored,” the company said.
