The Sultanate Council of Sokoto has urged Muslims across Nigeria to look out for the new crescent of Safar 1448AH on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, corresponding with the 29th day of Muharram 1448AH.

According to Ireporter Online, the council made the announcement through a statement issued on Monday by the Chairman of its Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu.

The council explained that the moon-sighting exercise would determine the official commencement of the Islamic month of Safar. It appealed to Muslims who sight the crescent to report immediately to their nearest District Head or Village Head for onward communication to the Sultan of Sokoto.

The reports will be reviewed and verified before being forwarded to the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who will make the final declaration on the beginning of the new Islamic month.

The statement urged members of the Muslim community to actively participate in the search for the Safar crescent in accordance with Islamic tradition.

The Sultanate Council noted that moon sighting remains a significant religious responsibility as it guides the determination of the start of each Islamic month.

Prof. Junaidu also offered prayers for Muslims involved in the exercise, asking for divine assistance and a successful completion of the religious duty.

The Sultanate Council has continued to coordinate moon-sighting activities nationwide, with the Sultan of Sokoto serving as the final authority responsible for confirming and announcing the commencement of new Islamic months after receiving verified reports from across the country.
