Abbas Speaks On Minimum Wage Nigerians Will Get After Review

Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has assured that lawmakers will work towards establishing a livable wage for Nigerians during the ongoing minimum wage review.

Abbas, represented by Oluwole-Oke, who represents Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency of Osun State, made this commitment in Abuja during the National Policy Dialogue on Corruption, Social Norms, and Behavior Change in Nigeria.

The event, organized by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other related Offences Commission (ICPC) in collaboration with the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria, supported by the MacArthur Foundation.

While pledging support for ICPC’s anti-corruption efforts, Abbas emphasized the need to address the factors that contribute to corruption. He highlighted the importance of a survival wage system, where citizens’ income can sustain their basic needs, thereby reducing the susceptibility to corruption.

Abbas also mentioned the ongoing review of the minimum wage, expressing the House of Representatives’ commitment to ensuring that Nigerians receive a survival wage. He indicated that a significant factor in promoting ethical behavior and reducing corruption lies in ensuring citizens’ financial stability.

Additionally, Abbas acknowledged the societal pressures on legislators to provide assistance and services beyond their legislative roles, attributing these demands to the prevalent poverty rates in Nigeria. He called for a comprehensive approach to curbing corruption, combining behavior change interventions, awareness campaigns, ethical leadership, and legal reforms.

Abbas and Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, both underscored the importance of fostering ethical values from an early age through education and awareness campaigns. They emphasized the need for transparent and accountable institutions, stronger legal frameworks, and active involvement of civil society organizations and the media in promoting ethical behaviors and holding governments accountable.

Akpabio, represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Saviour Enyiekere, also stressed that improving financial transparency and enforcing anti-corruption measures in both public and private sectors are crucial in the fight against corruption.
